Project Description

The Elkhart Environmental Center (EEC) is an environmental education facility that opened in 1991 on a remediated city dump. The EEC is a great way to experience nature inside the city! We have trails over 33 acres of  prairie space, wetlands, and riverfront. Our trails are FREE and open to the public 24/7! Our visitor’s cabin is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. But if the yellow gate is locked, feel free to park there and walk in to enjoy the site.

The EEC offers educational programs, events, and volunteer opportunities intended to connect the community to the environment. We host public programs (like Master Gardeners’ workshops). We put on events, like Arbor Day–where we give away free trees, have guided hikes, kids’ activities, and more! We also coordinate EnviroFest–the region’s largest environmental festival, which is currently held at the Wellfield Botanic Gardens. We also have a fantastic volunteer base who we work with to keep our trails, gardens, and programs in good shape. More information about our programs and events can be found online on our website or our Facebook.
